Trailer Thursdays: Vanishing Point

They – whoever ‘they’ actually are – don’t make ’em like this anymore. Which is a shame. I’ve been on a bit of a road movie kick this week despite not actually watching any road movies, which admittedly is a little strange, but here’s the trailer for one of the greatest ever made. Richard C. Sarafian’s Vanishing Point is a fine film, and one that isn’t just adored by autophiles; this trailer contains some cool footage and makes good use of gravel-voiced voiceover mumblings, as well as dialogue from the film by DJ Super Soul (Cleavon Little), who narrates the crazy speed-fuelled Denver-to-Colarado race against time performed by Kowalski (Barry Newman). Hopefully I’ll never discover that Jeremy Clarkson is a fan as this is one of my favourite road movies … but what are yours?

Hey, you can’t post twice in one day! I can’t keep up with ONE a day!

Anyway, this has always been a movie I’ve wanted to see, simply because I think it has a cool title. And the premise is pretty cool, too…but looking at the trailer, if this guy is delivering the car for someone, he’s sure not taking very good care of it!

And I don’t know if this counts as a road movie, but it has cars and chases and crashes, and it’s one of my favorite 70s cult movies (and by ‘cult’ I do mean both meanings of the term): ‘Race with the Devil’. I think it’s fun, and pretty well done for a drive-in action/horror movie, if you ever want to check it out on a slow train ride to work.

I will make a mental note to look out for Race with the Devil, I’ve never seen it and I love car chases and crashes! I recommend this, it’s a very cool film. There’s a band in the UK who titled one of their albums after it and sampled dialogue in one of their songs – I think quite a lot of people (myself included) watched it as a result.
