+ high-res version

Of course it’s great that a wider audience is now aware of the achievements of this trio of women (it’s a movie that had a big release in the US, something that is still disappointingly rare for a film that prominently features/is about black American women, and it seems to have found audiences around the world, too). Also, I can to some extent understand its significance for a large number of people who feel underrepresented by Hollywood, but – ironically, given all the blackboard equations – Hidden Figures is just way too formulaic for my liking. The song cues, the dialogue, the moments of drama, Kevin Fucking Costner in a white shirt with a buzzcut … far too much in this film is right on the nose. I wanted to like it but found it disappointingly average. (**½)
