I know this doesn’t sit very well with popular received opinion, but I’ve never been a big fan of Ardman Animation’s retro-style output – I feel neither joy nor dread at the prospect of watching the escapades of Wallace and Gromit, and I feel slightly less warm toward this otherwise well-received kids film from 2015 than most people seem to. That said, I’m not about to take against it, either. First of all it’s a film that is absolutely a force for good, and it has a gentle, slightly silly, mocking style of humour to it that I appreciated. Secondly, obviously it’s no mean feat to make a funny, feature length story in which recognised (human) language is largely absent. And thirdly, I like sheep. (***½)
