A very flabby and unfocused period gangster film from and starring Ben Affleck in which every cliche in the book is thrown at the screen. Some of Affleck’s acting is terrible, while there are hammy turns by Sienna Miller, Chris Cooper, Max Casella and Brendan Gleason; only Zoe Saldana emerges with any credit. It’s poorly-edited, unnecessarily baggy and it contains one of those awful voiceovers that explains the obvious in an extremely patronising fashion. An attempt to shoehorn five seasons of Boardwalk Empire into a two-hour movie, but there are at least some nice period cars, clothes and interiors to gawp at. (*½)
