Moana

Disney’s massively-successful Polynesian find-out-who-you-are tale is beautifully animated, with the much-touted hair and sea textures particularly impressing. The criticisms with regard to cultural appropriation and insensitivity have been interesting to read, and naturally I might like this film less if I was from Polynesia and more sensitive to racial stereotyping of Polynesian people, among other issues. Anyway, aside from the regional mythology, the setting and the race of the characters, Moana ticks all the usual boxes in terms of its story, the action and the songs; it’s another well-produced Disney film, so I can see why kids have loved it and why it provides adults with familiar reassurance.
