Famed surrealist short from Luis Buñuel in which the more extreme images – ants crawling out of a hole in a man’s hand, a razor apparently slicing through a woman’s eyeball – came to Salvador Dalí in a dream. (All I can say is the dude must have been eating cheese for six hours straight that day.) It’s actually more grisly and more shocking within the opening couple of minutes than pretty much any modern horror film that I’ve seen. The narrative follows a kind of dream logic, and it’s meticulously edited. I just don’t know what to give this in terms of a rating, though. Four sliced irises out of five ant-colony hands? (****)
