The Equalizer

A turgid, poorly-constructed update of the 1980s Edward Woodward TV drama that dispenses with the original’s low-key approach in favour of a long, unsubtle, balls-out conflict between Denzel Washington’s retired black ops operative/loner/hardware store employee and the Russian Mafia (oh, yes, them again). Of course Washington’s watchable, but there’s not much else to recommend it, and you have to wonder what the hell Antoine Fuqua’s career would look like had he not been able to rely so heavily on his regular leading man.
