A Film Diary

+ high-res version

Watched: 20 November

This is a well acted drama about a blind Lebanese musician, who discovers that the truth about his birth and his early life have been hidden from him. He subsequently goes on a journey of discovery across Lebanon, and this is seemingly a metaphor for the country’s own search for a national identity, or at least the desire to establish one and be recognised. I’m afraid that I started to tire of the story at a fairly early stage, and found the series of conversations he has that each reveal a little about his background somewhat tedious. There is a mesmerising musical performance at the end, though, which felt like some reward after a bit of a slog. (**½)
