+ high-res version

The central conceit of this Russian comedy drama is that a woman – who is already being treated in a fairly cruel way by colleagues – suddenly grows a tail, which exposes her to even more unpleasant behaviour in the workplace and elsewhere within society, though it does also attract the interest of a man who seems curious about the new appendage. There’s clearly a wider point being made about acceptance and tolerance of anyone who may stray from the straight, white norm within Russian society, and that’s welcome, but it’s all a little too obvious, and the film’s conceit seems overly-simple when compared with other stories that riff on the same idea, such as Ionesco’s Rhinocéros.
